Security has been heightened at some colleges and universities in the Washington, D.C., area, and officials began reviewing procedures in reaction to the fatal shootings at Virginia Tech. Schools as close as Radford University, in the Blue Ridge mountains about 15 miles from Virginia Tech, and as far as Howard University in Washington, 270 miles away, beefed up security and imposed other restrictions
