Work on 94,000-square-foot addition to Burdick Hall will begin in August.

Towson University in Towson, Md., is planning an expansion of recreation programs and services with a 94,000-square-foot expansion of Burdick Hall.

The university says construction of the addition is scheduled to begin in August. When the project is finished, Burdick Hall will have two multi¬purpose athletic courts, an elevated sprint hill, a mind-and-body studio for yoga and Pilates classes, a dedicated cycling studio a combat studio, an American Ninja-style obstacle course, and 22,000 square feet of fitness space for strength, cardio and functional training.

The project also includes an 8,000-square foot renovation to update existing offices and the mezzanine level of the existing fitness center.

HOK, the architect of record for the project, says it anticipates that the design of the addition will receive a LEED silver rating for environmentally friendly elements. Burdick Hall will remain open during construction of the addition. The project is scheduled for completion in 2017.

“It’s going to be a huge recruiting tool,” says Tia Freiburger, assistant director of facilities and operations for Campus Recreation Services. “Students will come to Towson and be really excited about all the opportunities this allows them to have.”
