Grand Valley State University is expanding its recreation center

Feb. 26, 2015
Facilities at the Allendale, Mich., campus have not kept up with growing student demand.

Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Mich., is moving forward with a $7.8 million expansion of its recreation center.

Kate Harmon, campus recreation director, says building the 17,000-square-foot addition will help the university address the demand for recreation and fitness programs that has not kept up with a robust increase in student enrollment. Grand Valley enrolled about 13,500 students in 1995; now more than 25,000 students attend classes.

The additional space will be used to provide more equipment and expand opportunities for weight and cardio training so that students can work out with minimal waiting.
