Campusand security risk-management problems solved with two-way radios

Glenn Ford is concerned with maintenance and security communication on a daily basis. He is director of physical plant at East Arkansas Community College (EACC), which has a primary campus that sits on 40 acres in Forest City, Ark., and includes several satellite facilities. His job includes the duties of the head of security, and years ago he decided to rely on two-way radios for instant, campus-wide communication over other devices.
"The way the world is today you never know when something is going to happen," says Ford. "Communication is the key. It’s good when you have some sort of emergency on campus, not necessarily related to some incident but a water main line leak or something, to have instant communication. Even if the power goes out, we’re charged and ready to go."
For EACC security, Glenn chose a network of RCA BR250 two-way radios. The customized package from Discount Two-Way Radio stays charged up to 12 hours, providing instant communication access to the entire property and security team throughout the majority of standard power outages. The radios are lightweight and compact but also extremely durable.
Two-way radios can integrate with a campus PA or emergency-alert system, which offers Ford total-campus coverage any time a problem occurs, without having to worry about outside issues such as cellular service or power.
"We use our radios for contact with the maintenance and security people. It’s very important that we have this kind of contact. It’s better than a cell phone where you have to punch in numbers; just one click on your radio and you automatically connect," says Ford.

Standalone electronic locks
Schlage. The CO-Series standalone locks offer a variety of options, enabling locksmiths and school facility managers to customize the right solution for a facility. Keypad only, proximity, magnetic stripe and dual credential plus PIN options are available. The innovative key-in-lever design also lets users leverage existing master-key systems. Users can control where people go and when by setting up access rights and schedules in a central database, which gets transferred to the locks using Schlage Utility Software with a handheld device. With some versions, audit trails can provide visibility as to who accessed a door and when.

Kalwall. The newly introduced Kalwall E-Series Windows, which allow integration of clear vision glass with translucent panels in the unitized Curtainwall System, are certified to TAS 201, 202 and 203, as well as ASTM E1886 and E1996 in fixed and project-out sash models. The clear glazing is 5 feet wide and can be up to 3 feet high, offering a variety of options to designers.

Electronic padlocksVidex. CyberLock padlocks provide electronic access control and deliver electronic feedback when security issues arise. The padlocks are ideal for applications where controlled access and the ability to track lock openings are needed. The system consists of the CyberLock padlock that has no keyway to vandalize, a programmable electronic key that cannot be duplicated, and software for managing the system. Each authorized employee’s key can be programmed with specific access permissions.
