Solar strategy

Oct. 1, 2014
How to add solar to your school efficiently and effectively.

Integrating renewable energy into campus design is a surefire way to demonstrate sustainability-focused leadership. It symbolizes an innovative outlook and a commitment to the environment. To become a reality though, renewable energy also has to make economic sense by reducing utility costs.

So you decide you want to go solar, but where do you start? Begin by finding a reputable partner who will guide you through the process, from conception to maintenance. With a partner in place, initial planning begins. This stage should focus on identifying three central needs – timeline, placement and purpose. Schools and universities have unique challenges to consider: Will installation need to be completed before the start of a new academic year, a big game or a graduation ceremony? Timing is crucial; delays may keep doors closed on buildings across your campus.

And what about location? Universities pride themselves on aesthetics, providing students a home away from home and beautiful places to gather for outside study sessions or pick-up Frisbee tournaments. When constructing solar installations, it’s important to do so in a way that enhances rather than detracts from the surrounding landscape.

But perhaps the biggest factor to consider is purpose. What are you trying to accomplish with this installation? Whether you’re looking to reduce energy emissions, gain LEED certification or drastically reduce your utility costs, each will affect the process in a unique way. Knowing what you want from the start will set your project up for success.

While solar costs have gone down considerably, solar installations are still a big investment. An experienced investment partner should be able to help you identify the most favorable financial terms, typically through a power purchase agreement or lease structure. Negotiating and structuring these deals can be extremely complex, so make sure you choose a partner who can help monetize tax credits and depreciation benefits to help you assess the true cost of ownership and find the solution that fits your unique financial requirements.

When these pieces come together, the results are unbeatable. Universities that have gone solar are already reaping the benefits, generating hundreds of thousands of kilowatts of renewable energy each year. With a trusted partner and a plan in place, solar is a smart, sustainable step forward for school and university campuses.
