States with highest percentage of students receiving out-of-school suspensions 2011-12

Across the nation, 6.4 percent of students received out-of-school suspensions.

Earlier this month, the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistics released "Indicators of School Crime and Safety: 2015." It found that 3.2 million public elementary and secondary school students received out-of-school suspensions in 2011-12. That number equates to 6.4 percent of all students.

Here are the states (and Washington, D.C., that had the highest percentage of students who received out-of-school suspensions.
