States with the most public school teachers, 2013-14

Feb. 23, 2016
Although California has many more students, statistics show that Texas has by far the most teachers working in public schools.

Data from the National Center for Education Statistics show that 3,113,764 teachers were working in U.S. public schools in 2013-14. But the numbers of students in those teachers' classrooms varied widely from state to state: Vermont had an average pupil-teacher ratio of 10.8, and California public schools had an average pupil-teacher ratio of 24.3.

The state with the most teachers in 2013-14 was Texas. Even though Texas has 1.1 million fewer students than California, it had 75,000 more teachers working in public schools.
