From 1994 to 2013, K-12 public school districts in the United States spent $925 billion on maintenance and operations, and $973 billion on capital construction, according to the State of Our Schools 2016 report from the 21st Century Fund, the National Council on School Facilities and The Center for Green Schools.
But to keep up with facility needs as student enrollment grows, many states will need to continue spending billions of dollars over the next several years on school construction.
In assessing future facility needs for the nation's school systems, the State of Our Schools report calculated estimates for how much individual states will have to spend from 2012 to 2024 to accommodate the growing number of students in their districts. Here are the 10 states projected to have the greatest new construction needs.
