The Socorro (Texas) Independent School District has won approval of a $297 million bond request that will enable it to build additional facilities to accommodate increasing student enrollment.

The plan calls for the district, based in El Paso, to use the bond funds to build two elementary schools and one combination elementary/middle school; Socorro also will complete construction of Eastlake High School and El Dorado 9th-grade Academy. Other projects include renovations of existing elementary schools and technology upgrades.

The district reported an enrollment of about 42,500 in fall 2010 and projects that by 2015 the number will climb 16 percent, to 49,278.

The bond amount was whittled down from an initial list of needs totaling $430 million.
