Columbus State University is planning to move its College of Education and Health Professions to its RiverPark campus in downtown Columbus, Ga.
The move will further expand the university’s downtown presence. Currently, the university has about a dozen buildings downtown, as well as 1,800 students, faculty and staff and its nursing school.
The school of education will be located at the site of the former Ledger-Enquirer newspaper building, which was purchased by the university’s foundation just before Christmas, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Columbus State plans to demolish the old building and replace it with a new structure that the school hopes to occupy by fall 2016.
The university has raised $18.5 million so far and expects that the project will cost a total of $25 million.
