An elementary school in Washington state and a lab building in Michigan were the two top projects in American School & University's 2021 Educational Interiors Showcase.
Mary Lyon Elementary School in Tacoma, Wash., received the Crow Island School Citation as the top K-12 entry in the competition. The three-story design maximizes outdoor space, and a central, atrium library interconnects all floors. Support spaces are adjacent to learning neighborhoods for monitoring and continuous inclusion.
The Advanced Manufacturing Partnership (AMP) Lab @ WMU in Grand Rapids, Mich., received the Collegiate Citation as the top higher education project in the competition. The AMP Lab @ WMU occupies the first two stories of Western Michigan University’s location in downtown Grand Rapids.Visibility into the building, and throughout it, was a key design driver. This enables students and visitors to see the innovation and learning taking place throughout the space.
The jurors also awarded a Special Citation to Mt. San Jacinto College's Temecula Valley Campus in Temecula, Calf. The campus is designed with an emphasis on shared spaces where students from different classes can collaborate in a team environment. Transparency and visibility throughout the interior are key design features.
