From the 2024 Educational Interiors Showcase: Harrison High School, Commons Areas Renovations
Oct. 11, 2024
The project was recognized for outstanding design in the Common Areas category.
Since it was constructed in 1970, Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana, has seen its enrollment more than triple. During that time the school's footprint has expanded, but interior commons areas were outdated and inadequate. To address these deficiencies, designers increased the main corridor’s width and incorporated new patterned terrazzo flooring that mirrors the ceiling design. Two classrooms were removed to create an expanded student commons. A reoriented media center entrance is more easily accessed, and inside, several small group study areas provide for collaborative learning opportunities.
