A defined main entrance at West Millbrook Middle School in Raleigh, North Carolina, emphasizes site and building presence, and a separate entrance provides after-hours access for community events. Previous middle schools in the district housed sixth graders in a separate building; the new school places them on the third floor, creating a degree of insulation while keeping all students under one roof. In addition to multiple collaboration spaces in each classroom wing, built-in reading nooks provide seating where students may pause to study or chat.
