From the 2025 Educational Interiors Showcase: Prince George’s County Blueprint Schools Program, Phase I
Key Highlights
- The district built five middle schools and one pre-K-8 academy in half the typical construction timeline.
- The schools have integrated biophilic design principles to enhance learning environments and promote well-being.
Faced with aging infrastructure and crowding, Prince George’s County (Maryland) Public Schools embarked on an ambitious undertaking in 2021 to accelerate the delivery of six new schools. It became the first public school system in the nation to leverage a full-scope alternative financing model to design, build, finance and maintain a multischool K-12 construction program. This approach enabled the district to complete five middle schools and one pre-K-8 academy in half the time of traditionally funded projects. Concepts based on biophilic design principles were used.
