Families may have to pay up to $325 per child for service that now is provided for free
The Alpine (Calif.) Union School District is considering charging families up to $325 per child a year for rides to and from school. This year, children rode the buses free. The small rural district must cut more than $1 million from its budget next school year. Charging fees would generate about $125,000 a year. School districts are not required to provide transportation, except for special-needs students and a few other exceptions.
