KIPP may bring charters to St. Louis

City's mayor is pushing for charter school operators to open schools

The Knowledge Is Power Program, known as KIPP, is the first charter school network to speak of its interest in St. Louis since Mayor Francis Slay announced last week a push for high-quality charter schools. Charter advocates say KIPP's arrival and success could persuade educators, sponsors and reluctant parents to give charters a chance.

Earlier: St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay is laying the groundwork for a new system of hand-picked public charter schools, meant to provide an alternative to the city's sinking school district and draw families back to the city. Slay's office is sending about 70 letters to local educators, Midwest nonprofit education groups, and big charter school companies across the country, inviting each of them to start a school in the city.
