Orange County (Fla.) district will close school with long ties to the black community
Feb. 9, 2007
Robert Hungerford Preparatory High is being underused, officials say.
Orange County (Fla.) Public Schools will shutter Robert Hungerford Preparatory High this fall as the district reconsiders what to do with the historic school, a campus with deep ties to the black community since the days of the segregated South. Hungerford was due for extensive renovations in 2014 that could cost as much as $16 million. Reluctant to spend millions on an underused school, district officials say they prefer to look at better ways to spend district funds. Officials wants to build a new school on the site.
