Seeking more student walkers

Schools want to improve traffic safety so that more kids can walk or pedal bikes to classes.

Fewer than 15 percent of students walk or ride bikes to their schools, and health advocates would like to boost that number. For this to occur, parents must be confident that their children can get to their schools safely. That means more sidewalks and clearly marked bike lanes or paths separated from roadways, lower traffic speed on school routes, safer crosswalks, well-trained crossing guards at all corners near schools and adult supervision.
