A Jefferson Parish (La.) school district proposal to lease and transform the former Archbishop Blenk campus in Gretna into a magnet school has been defeated. The school board voted 5-4 in favor of the proposal, but fell short of the required two-thirds majority because it would have required several million dollars in operating expenses.

EARLIER: The city of Gretna, La., has cleared one more hurdle in its bid to buy the shuttered Archbishop Blenk High School and use it both as a West Bank magnet high school and a space for the mentally disabled. The State Bond Commission has authorized Gretna to spend $3 million to find a new home for the West Bank ARC, the nonprofit group. The city has already given $10,000 to the Archdiocese of New Orleans toward buying the property on Gretna Boulevard. The archdiocese closed the all-girls Catholic school in May and merged its students with Immaculata High School in Marrero.
