Central Community District in Baton Rouge, La., wins bond approval

May 5, 2008
District will build middle school as its first project

From The Baton Rouge Advocate: Now that voters have approved three new taxes to fund its $55.5 million capital improvements plan, the Central Community School System in Baton Rouge, La., will focus first on building a new middle school. Critical repairs at other schools and construction of a new elementary school will follow, although simultaneous work on multiple projects is likely because the school system plans to sell bonds backed by the new taxes.

FROM JULY 2008: Voters in the Central (La.) Community school system have rejected rejected sales and property tax increases that would have provided funds for a $98 million education complex in the new district. Voters rejected a 25-year, three-quarter-cent sales tax as well as a $49.2 million bond issue. Central was part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school system until it formed its own school district from in 2007. The new district would like to build a new complex to handle its expected growth through 2012.
