Apache Elementary will be larger, more energy-efficient than existing facility
From The Johnson County Sun: The Shawnee Mission (Kan.) district is planning to build a new facility to replace the existing Apache Elementary School in Overland Park. Groundbreaking is scheduled to take place this summer for the two-story, 75,000-square-foot building, which will be built next to the existing 44,000-square-foot building. The new Apache will have fuel-efficient vehicle parking spaces, photovoltaic panels and sensor control of lights. Playground mulch, structural steel and aluminum, and carpet will be made of recycled materials. During construction, demolition debris such as metal, asphalt and mineral fiber will be diverted from landfills. The building will use many of the standards for LEED-certified buildings, but the district will not seek LEED certification. The architect is ACI/Frangkiser Hutchens.
