Four charter schools win approval to open in 2012 in Washington, D.C.

52 charter schools already operate in the nation's capital

From The Washington Post: The Washington, D.C., Public Charter School Board has approved plans for four schools to open in fall 2012. BASIS DC, DC Scholars, the Latin American Youth Center Career Academy and Creative Minds have beenselected from among 18 applicants. More than 29,000 students, almost 40 percent of the public school population, attend one of 52 charter schools in Washington, D.C. BASIS has attracted national attention for the rigor of its academic program. Its school in Tucson, Ariz., has been ranked among the country’s best high schools.
