Washington, D.C., school system reports enrollment of 44,397

Sept. 10, 2009
Numbers have declined as thousands of students now attend charter schools

From The Washington Post: Enrollment in the Washington, D.C., school district is 44,397 as of Wednesday, bringing it within a few hundred students of administrators' target for the 2009-10 academic year. When classes began Aug. 24, the school system had reported 37,000 students registered, but many families don't register their children until September. Over the past decade, enrollment figures have declined in part because of the growth of the public charter schools. Charters expect to serve 28,066 D.C. students this academic year, up by more than 10 percent from 2008-09.
