From The New York Times: The U.S. House has approved a bill that would provide $10 billion to help school districts avoid educator layoffs. Some of the money would be generated by $800 million in cuts to several of President Obama’s key education initiatives. It would reduce by $500 million the award money available to states that have submitted proposals in the Race to the Top competition. The White House says that if the final bill included cuts to education reforms, Obama is likely to veto it. Earlier...from The Washington Post: A senior House Democrat is proposing to slice President Obama's race to the Top fund and other school reform initiatives to help pay for a $10 billion measure to save education jobs. The proposal by Rep. David R. Obey (Wis.), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, would eliminate about $500 million from the $4.35 billion Race to the Top fund and another $300 million in other education programs.
