Anne Arundel County charter will shut down after all

After principal quits, KIPP school in Edgewater, Md., says decision to close is final.

An Edgewater, Md., charter school that shut down and reopened over the past three weeks has reversed course again, deciding to close after its principal resigned. This time, officials with the Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) Harbor Academy say the closure is for certain. The principal resigned because 10 of 12 teachers found new jobs after the initial June 20 announcement that the school would close.

Earlier: A week after announcing that an Edgewater, Md., charter school would be shuttered, its divided leadership has voted to keep the school open. But the 3-2 vote by the board of KIPP Harbor Academy left more questions than answers: Where the school would operate? Who would be its principal? As a vote looms to formally close the KIPP Harbor Academy, a charter school in Edgewater, Md., Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold and schools Superintendent Kevin M. Maxwell are calling on an Annapolis art institute and the college that has housed the 2-year-old school to find room for its students. The academy told parents last week that it must close because it could not find a new location to house growing enrollment.

One of two public charter schools in Anne Arundel County, Md., is shutting down because it has been unable to find a new location for its growing program. Officials of the Knowledge Is Power Program, which operates the KIPP Harbor Academy in Edgewater, say it is the first time they have been forced to close because they couldn't secure a space to lease.
