Flint (Mich.) district will close 8 schools

6 will close this year, 2 more next year
May 1, 2009

From The Flint Journal: After weeks of back-and-forth discussion on which buildings to shutter, the Flint (Mich.) school board has decided to close Central High School and five elementaries -- Anderson, Civic Park, Garfield, Merrill and Stewart -- at the end of this school year. Coolidge and Wilkins elementaries are slated to close the following year. Also, about 214 district staff, most of them teachers, will receive layoff notices. The drastic cuts were made to avoid a nearly $20 million deficit created by two decades of steadily decreasing enrollment and increased costs.
