Board races could determine future of year-round campuses in Wake County (N.C.) district

Candidates oppose district's decision to assign students to year-round schools without OK from parents
Sept. 24, 2009

From The Raleigh News & Observer: The future of year-round school program in the Wake County (N.C.) district could be decided in the next few weeks -- not by a panel of judges, but by voters. Candidates who support neighborhood schools and criticize Wake's school diversity policy and annual round of student reassignments also have embraced voluntary attendance at year-round schools as part of their campaign message. These candidates could back Wake away from its decision, upheld in May by the state Supreme Court, to send students to year-round schools without securing parents' permission.
