Chicago plans to open 5 new technology-themed elementary magnets

District will open 35 new schools in 2008-09

In an effort to better prepare pupils for a high-tech world, Chicago will open five new magnet elementary schools focused on technology this fall. School officials also said they plan to replicate three existing schools, two with a technology focus and one emphasizing literature. Schools chief Arne Duncan says the district will have a record 35 new schools opening in 15 neighborhoods in the 2008-09 school year.
