The partnership plans to open 5 schools in the city over the next 10 years

The leaders of a national charter school network, with the support of Washington University, say they will build a cluster of five tuition-free public schools in St. Louis. For the first time, the university will sponsor charter schools. University Chancellor Mark Wrighton heralded the collaboration with the San Francisco-based Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP). The charter schools would target roughly 1,500 low-income students in five new St. Louis campuses over the next 10 years. The first, a middle school, would open in the fall of 2009.
