Budget crisis and shrinking enrollment impel district to shutter some campuses

From The Kansas City Star: Facing a serious budget shortfall, the Shawnee Mission (Kan.) school board has voted to close two middle schools and an elementary school. The schools that will close: Mission Valley Middle School in Prairie Village; Antioch Middle School in Overland Park; and Bonjour Elementary School in Lenexa. The board also approved attendance boundary changes at several elementary schools. The board listened for almost two hours of impassioned public comment before the vote. Speakers opposed to the closings argued the plan would not generate the savings projected by the district.

Eighteen schools would be affected by proposed attendance-area changes, including four of the five high schools. Three elementary schools would change high school attendance areas.
