Detroit looks to relocate students from fire-damaged school

Bennett Elementary caught fire over winter break

Detroit schools officials will meet with parents and guardians of children at Bennett Elementary School to discuss options for temporarily relocating students after a fire last week caused significant smoke and water damage. Contractors at Bennett touched off a small fire beneath the floorboards as they cut a metal plate on the floor. A gas line also was severed, exacerbating the situation. The 600 students who attend the school were on winter break. About 85 percent of the building suffered damage.
