Catholic school teachers suspend New York strike

Striking teachers at Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York have suspended their job action. The president of the union conducting the strike says it has been called off for the moment following a negotiation session with the archdiocese during which both parties bargained in good faith. Nearly 200 teachers affiliated with the union began the strike on Friday at 10 schools on Staten Island and in Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester County. The strike continued Monday at eight schools.

EARLIER: Teachers at eight Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of New York will continue to walk the picket lines on Monday morning. The strike was called at selected schools Friday to pressure the archdiocese to hand over health insurance records that the union needs to obtain a new plan. The union’s contract expired on Aug. 31, and the archdiocese made a final offer on a new contract in November. The major sticking points have been an increased premium for health insurance and the union’s desire for larger pay raises and a better pension plan.
