University of Iowa plans $70 million power plant

Facility would provide backup power for buildings on west side of campus
July 27, 2010

From The Iowa City Press-Citizen: The University of Iowa is aiming to build a new $70 million power plant. The facility would be a backup steam and electrical generator for west campus facilities such as University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and university research buildings. The hospitals and research buildings now receive electricity from the UI Power Plant, but that facility was knocked offline for four months during Iowa River flooding in 2008. Hospital officials were forced to cancel non-essential surgeries and procedures during that time because of a lack of electrical power.
