Detroit will begin tearing down 14 vacant schools

Empty structures have attracted vandals and thieves
Dec. 8, 2009
From The Detroit Free Press: The Detroit district will tear down 14 vacant schools beginning in January, eliminating maintenance costs and getting rid of buildings that have been a haven for graffiti artists, vandals and thieves. To pay for the demolition, the district will use $3.1 million left over from a 1994 bond issue and nearly $30 million from Proposal S, the bond proposal voters approved in November.
