New Orleans expands police power for officers on college campuses

Officers at 8 colleges and universities receive commissions from the city police department.
April 27, 2007

The New Orleans Police Department has gained 109 pairs of eyes, ears and feet by giving departmental commissions, along with expanded areas of jurisdiction and responsibility, to police officers from eight of the city's institutions of higher learning. The commissions, which New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley conferred, were given to officers who had undergone up to 16 weeks of police-academy training. With their new authority, campus police will be empowered to work in the neighborhoods beyond their campuses.
