Missouri Education Commissioner D. Kent King, a former small-town English teacher who shepherded the state’s most urban school districts through high-stakes struggles with academic performance, has died. King, who had continued to work through early December despite battling cancer for more than two years, was 65. He stepped into the state’s top educator role in 2000.
