Physical education programs lacking in California

Despite state requirements, 38 percent of public school students in the state don't take part in physical education programs, study says

News release: Despite a requirement in California that public middle and high school students get 400 minutes of physical education every 10 days, about 1.3 million teens — 38 percent of all adolescents enrolled in the state's public schools — do not participate in any school-based physical education classes, according to a policy brief from the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research. Cuts to physical education programs, as well as exemptions that enable high school students to skip up to two years of physical education, have contributed to the low levels of participation.
