Detroit Public Schools lost nearly 12,000 students in the past year, a drop that will cost the district about $90 million next year in state aid. The district will receive funding for 106,485 students based on state-audited enrollment numbers. That marks a 10.1 percent decline from the previous year and a loss of more than a third of the district's students since 2000.

FROM FALL 2007: Detroit Public Schools is expected to lose $71 million in state funding this year because of a loss of 7,462 students since last fall, according to the Michigan Department of Education. The district now has 104,975 students, down from 112,437 in September 2006, according to unaudited enrollment figures from September. The loss is slightly greater than district officials anticipated when crafting the system's $1.2 billion budget, which means the administration will have to find areas to trim. (Detroit News)
