Bad economy forces districts to look at closing buildings

Long Island, N.Y., school systems face difficult choices

It's never welcome news in a community that a school is closing. But fiscally trying times, coupled with declining enrollment, have driven some Long Island, N.Y., school districts to consider that option. The Lawrence school district plans to close an elementary school and add fifth graders to its middle school population of Grades 6-8, and the Rockville Centre district is exploring whether to close one of its five elementary schools.
