New York City is relocating school where construction was making students sick

Public School 51 campus has been in the middle of a construction zone

From The New York Daily News: New York City officials have agreed to move Public School 51 out of a building surrounded by construction projects that parents said were sickening kids. The school will move from its building on 45th Street to the Our Lady of Good Counsel church on 91st Street. Students will begin the coming school year at the new site and will be bused there. Officials say PS 51 will not return to its old site until construction slows down. Many students have experienced breathing trouble that have been attributed to toxic dust kicked up by the nearby construction.

From The New York Daily News: A New York City elementary school is in the middle of a construction zone, and parents and teachers say toxic dust from the project is making kids sick. Parents and teachers say students at Public School 51 are coming down with breathing problems, bloody noses and headaches, all believed to be caused by construction next door. The school is situated in the middle of a construction project that will see 10 new high-rise buildings built on the block by 2013, The 105-year-old school building is slated to be turned into luxury condos, so the city is digging a foundation for a new school next door.
