Plans unveiled for new Slidell, La., high school; FEMA is expected to cover much of the cost.

Lofted seven feet in the air atop a series of brick piers, the new Salmen High School in Slidell, La. will feature a tiered, outdoor amphitheater; covered walkways; and a 1,000-seat gymnasium--all boosted well above the ground to meet revised flood elevations and safeguard the campus against future hurricanes. The project carries an estimated $40 million price tag. However, district officials expect to pay only $7 million of that; the Federal Emergency Management Agency is expected to subsidize the bulk of the cost. The architect is Fauntleroy & Latham.
