18 more charters to open in New York City

City will have 78 charter schools operating

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg says 18 new charter schools are scheduled to start classes in the city this fall. The new schools -- the largest number to open in the city in a single year -- will bring the number of charter schools in the city to 78, serving 24,000 students. When Bloomberg took office in 2002, the city had 17 charters with 3,200 students.
