Teachers reject furlough proposal in Illinois district

Proviso District 209 proposed two weeks of unpaid furlough to deal with deficit.

With the threat of staff cuts looming, teachers in Proviso (Ill.) District 209 has rejected a district proposal that they each take a two-week unpaid furlough so the district can pay its bills. District officials say without the furlough, they will have to consider eliminating jobs as they try to fill a budget deficit of up to $11 million.
