Weston, Fla., looks at running its own schools

City would operate schools within its boundaries as charter schools

In a little more than a decade, Weston, Fla., has tripled in size to 62,000. City leaders, no longer convinced the Broward County School District can meet its students' needs, are considering making an offer: Let us run our own schools. Weston residents are still smarting from the school district's decision in late May to postpone building a new high school to ease crowding at Cypress Bay High, the only high school within the city limits.
