$23.3 million donation will boost Los Angeles charters

Eli Broad's money will help start 17 new campuses

Philanthropist Eli Broad is providing $23.3 million to jump-start at least 17 new charter school campuses in Los Angeles. KIPP schools will receive $12 million, and Aspire Public Schools will receive $5 million. L.A. Unified already has 128 charter schools, more than any school system in the nation, enrolling about 7 percent of the district's 700,000 students.
