Parents say year-round schedule would limit children's activities

Opponents of extended calendar in Wake County (N.C.) worry that change will hurt their children.

Conflicts between what the Wake County (N.C.) school system needs and what some families want are driving the opposition to mandatory year-round schedules at some district schools. Opponents have made their case in 18 affidavits filed as part of a lawsuit aimed at blocking the school system's decision to convert 22 schools to a year-round calendar. Some concerns, such as loss of vacation time and putting siblings on different schedules, have been echoed before. But in the affidavits, parents express concern that the year-round schedule could limit opportunities to practice volunteerism and exercise, and could cause some children to suffer anxiety.

EARLIER: Opponents of mandatory year-round schools in Wake County, N.C., say they will sue the school board "in the near future." Many parents are upset about the year-round calendars, in which students attend class on a rotating schedule. The school board is converting 22 schools to the schedule to handle record growth in the number of students.
