Admissions down in University of California system

Officials say only 72.5 percent of applicants have been accepted for the fall

From The Los Angeles Times: Getting into many of the University of California's nine undergraduate campuses has become harder. Mainly in response to budget-related enrollment cutbacks for the fall, the percentage of California applicants offered freshman admission by at least one UC campus dropped from 75.4 percent last year to 72.5 percent this year. Officials estimated that it was the lowest acceptance rate for the university sysem since 2000.

FROM JANUARY 2009: University of California regents have voted to trim freshman enrollment for next fall by 2,300 students, or about 6 percent, as a response to reduced state funding during the worsening budget crisis. Six of the UC system's nine undergraduate campuses will see significant cuts to their ranks of freshmen in the fall. UC Irvine and UC San Diego, the hardest hit, are slated for reductions of about 12 percent.
