Illinois district OKs potential layoff of 363 teachers

Carpentersville-based district hopes salary cuts may avert some of the layoffs

From The Northwest Daily Herald: The school board of Community Unit District 300 in Carpentersville, Ill., has voted, 4-3 to allow the administration to issue pink slips to 363 teachers The board’s decision came during a meeting where members of the public, mostly students, urged board members not to approve the layoffs. District officials said that they hope to rehire many of the teachers if their union agrees to salary and benefit cuts.
REACTION: In protest of the board’s decision, nearly 2,000 students at the district’s three high schools staged a brief walkout. (The Chicago Tribune)
