Archdiocese of New York may push for school closings

Plan may call for as many as 30 Catholic schools to close
Sept. 21, 2010

From The New York Times: Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York is signaling that he will soon mount an aggressive effort to close or consolidate elementary schools — perhaps as many as 30 of the 216 in the system. He also may change the way parochial schools are financed. Instead of having local parishes cover most of the costs of operating their schools, the expense of educating roughly 56,000 grade school students would be spread among all the parishes, and all 2.5 million Catholics in the archdiocese.
