Detroit says it will close another 16 schools

From The Detroit News: Detroit school district officials say they plan to close 16 schools and offer four others as candidates to be turned into charter schools. Emergency Manager Roy Roberts announced the latest round of downsizing of the district, which has shrunk from 150,000 students and more than 200 schools to less than 70,000 students among 130 schools. Roberts says that rather than support under-utilized buildings, the district will close buildings and move students into other schools.

Also...from The Detroit Free Press: The latest round of downsizing to hit Detroit Public Schools will leave the district with as many as 35 fewer schools. In addition to the 16 school buildings that will close permanently at the end of the school year and four that could become charter schools, 15 schools that among the lowest-performing 5 percent in the state will be transferred to the statewide reform school district.
